How Do Cashback Websites Work?
Cashback sites work via a profit sharing model. When you shop at a business through a cashback website, the business pays the cashback site for the referral, and the cashback site shares some of that money with you (the shopper).
Keep in mind, the ways that you can earn cashback vary by site and may include:
- Shopping directly through the cashback website. If you're looking to earn cashback when shopping online, this is the most common way to do it. Most cashback sites will show you all the stores/products/categories you can earn cashback on as well as the percentage of cashback you'll get for shopping. Then, you just click a “Shop” or “Activate” button (or similar), and the cashback site will redirect you to the store. From there, just make your purchase as usual and the cashback site will track it and reward your rebate in a few days.
- Shopping through a cashback browser extension. This is similar to the above and again applies to online shopping. Many cashback sites offer browser extensions these days. Simply add them to a supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.), and the cashback extension will alert you when you visit a website that offers cashback. Then, all you need to do is click the “Activate Cashback” button or similar, and make your purchase. Many of these types of extensions will also help you find coupons/promo codes for even more savings.
- Sharing your receipts. Some cashback websites (though this is more common on apps, which make the receipt scanning easier) will give you cashback for sharing your receipts. This is most common with in-store shopping, but works for online purchases too. With these types of sites, you'll typically have to purchase specific products to earn cashback. However, some sites (like ReceiptPal and Receipt Hog) will also just pay you for any old receipt no matter where it's from or what's on it.
- Linking a store loyalty card. This is a less common way to earn cashback rebates, but it does exist for some stores and sites. All you have to do is link your loyalty card to the cashback site and it'll be able to track your purchases and reward you automatically. This is mainly for in-store shopping.
- Linking a credit/debit card. This is another way to earn automatic rebates both in-store and online. Just link your credit/debit card to the cashback site and shop at participating stores.
Are Cashback Sites Worth It?
Cashback sites are very worthwhile if you're looking for an easy way to save money on things you were already planning to buy. It really doesn't take long to look up a specific store or product on a cashback site, and the savings can be pretty significant in some cases. Plus, with cashback browser extensions, the work is done for you automatically.
Pros
- Easy to use. Most cashback websites are really easy to get the hang of.
- It's free money. As long as you're not purchasing pointless things, earning cashback on something you were already planning to buy is basically free money.
- Good way to find deals and coupons. Many rebate sites also offer coupons (printable), promo codes (for online shopping), and deal-finding tools. These are all things that can help you save additional dough.
- Referral bonuses. Most cashback websites have referral programs where you can share your link with friends to earn extra money.
Cons
- Requires a bit of effort. Most cashback sites don't require much effort, but you'll still have to remember to use them to earn your rebates.
- Slow payout speeds. This is most common with online cashback shopping sites. Due to online return windows, cashback is often held for 30-90 days before being available for payout. This time frame can vary based on what you're purchasing and the site you're using.
- High payout minimums. Most cashback sites require you to earn around $20 before being able to cash out your earnings. This varies by site.
- Can tempt impulse purchases. If you're an avid shopper, the idea of earning cashback might tempt you to buy things you don't need. Be careful!
- Privacy concerns. Some sites may track your shopping habits, which can be a privacy concern for some. If this is something you're worried about, be sure to review the privacy policies of each site you use before getting started.
